The Kerala High Court has issued notice to the State government on a petition by filmmaker and former chairperson of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy Ranjith seeking to quash a sexual harassment case registered against him on a Bengali actor’s complaint.

He alleged in his petition that the complaint against him was false and was an outcome of a conspiracy hatched by actor-filmmaker Joshy Joseph and his friends with a view to oust his from the post of the chairperson of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy.

He added that there was no allegation of assault or use of force by the petitioner. The alleged incident took place in 2009. However, the complaint was filed on August 26, 2024 — 15 years after the alleged incident. The petitioner said that the magistrate court should not have taken cognizance of the offences.
