Daltonganj: A 32-year-old railway official who was patrolling tracks at Daltonganj railway station of East Central railway's Dhanbad division died after he was hit by Dn Kolkata Ahmedabad express train at 3.15 am on Friday.
Daltonganj railway station superintendent Umesh Kumar said, "The incident occurred barely 2 km away from Daltonganj railway station at Sudna railway crossing gate number 12. Abhishek Kumar was on duty. Railway lines contract in winter. It causes cracks and breakages. He was out looking for it when the fatal accident occurred."
He said the case of Abhishek is not of any run over. "He was not crossing the line. He was hit by a high speed express train," he said.
Railway sources said that the gap between adjacent railway tracks measures slightly over 4 feet, and during simultaneous traffic on up and down lines, railway personnel occasionally become disoriented, leading to fatal incidents.
The body remained at the site for over six hours as railway staff demanded senior Dhanbad officials' presence to announce compensation and employment benefits for the deceased's family.
Sub-divisional police officer Mani Bhushan Prasad said, "A section of the workforce of the railway here tried to disrupt the post casualty management following which police had to admonish them to refrain from causing any law and order situation."
