Officials of the Social Welfare Department on Thursday visited the family of the victim Siddaraju, who was allegedly tortured and beaten to death by his employer and his relative at a farmhouse in Huralahalli village, accusing him of stealing tender coconuts on January 10.

The Hindu had reported on the Nelamangala Rural police arresting a journalist and his relative for allegedly torturing and beating up the 45-year-old Dalit labourer to death in an inebriated state at their farmhouse in Hurulihalli village on the outskirts of the city.

The accused, identified as Manjunath (34), owns the farmhouse and is the brother-in-law of Ravikumar, 39, a reporter with a Kannada news channel.

The Assistant Director of the SWD, along with his team, visited the victim’s house, immediately provided three months’ rations to the family, and assessed the situation to recommend suitable compensation. The official also recommended that Chethan H.S., the son of the deceased and the complainant in the case, be given a government job.

The officials are collecting the details of the family members and waiting for the post-mortem report to complete the formalities before issuing suitable compensation to the victim, the Deputy Director of SWD, Bengaluru district, said in a report submitted to the SWD commissioner.
