Saif Ali Khan knife attack highlights: Actor ‘out of danger’ after surgery; police identify one accused

Condemning the attack, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that actors Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan too were facing threat to their lives.

Ms. Banerjee described the attack on Mr. Saif as shocking and said the entire family of the actor should be provided security.

Jewellery designer Saba Pataudi reacted to the knife attack on Saif Ali Khan and said she is in “shock” but proud of her elder brother for the way he defended his family from an intruder.

“I’m in shock and reeling from this insane incident but proud of you bhaijaan. Taking care of the family and standing tall would make Abba so proud. I am. Get well soon. Missing being there. Will see you soon. Duas and prayers always,” Ms. Saba said in a post on Instagram where she also shared a childhood photo with Mr. Saif.

CCTV visuals of the unidentified intruder who repeatedly stabbed actor Saif Ali Khan inside his house in Mumbai’s Bandra area in the early morning have been traced and ten teams have been formed to investigate the offence, police said.

As per the preliminary probe, the intruder did not force his entry or break into the actor’s 12th floor flat in Satguru Sharan building, but possibly sneaked in at some point earlier in the night, a police official said.

After the incident that took place around 2.30 am, the attacker took the staircase to escape. His CCTV visuals were traced on the sixth floor, police sources said.

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole claimed the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan has exposed the “breakdown” in law and order in Maharashtra, where he said celebrities, leaders of the ruling party, and citizens are unsafe.

The Congress leader demanded that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, whom he termed “ineffective” and “weak”, resign as the home minister as the rising crime rate in the state reflects the government’s failure.

The Chief Minister should have the courage to take concrete action instead of making hollow statements, Mr. Patole said in a statement.

Patole said the attack on the Padma Shri award-winning actor is a glaring example of the “breakdown” of law and order in Maharashtra.

“If such incidents occur in the bustling area of Bandra in Mumbai, who is safe in the city? Looking at the increasing crime rates in Mumbai, Pune, Beed, Parbhani, and Nagpur, one wonders if there is a home minister in the state at all,” Mr. Patole said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan by an intruder at his home was a serious incident, but it would be wrong to call Mumbai unsafe because of it.

Police were taking action, and the government will take steps to make the country’s financial capital safer, said Mr. Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio also.

“I think Mumbai is the safest among mega cities in the country. It is true that some incidents take place sometimes, and they must be taken seriously. But to say that Mumbai is unsafe due to such incidents is not right,” Mr. Fadnavis told reporters.

“Mumbai’s image gets maligned (due to such comments). But, to make the city safer, the government will certainly make efforts,” he further said.

Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam said the Opposition was trying to politicise the attack, and claimed a wrong angle was being given to the case because of the actor’s surname.

The incident was a “theft attempt”, and the culprit has been identified and will be nabbed soon, Mr. Kadam told a TV channel.

Mumbai is a safe place, the minister asserted, and claimed the opposition was trying to malign the police.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said, “No one is safe. Let alone ordinary people, even celebrities who have their own security are not safe.” “Saif Ali Khan is a Padma Shri recipient and recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi along with his family,” Mr. Raut noted. 

Police in the State are mostly deployed for the security of politicians, “especially those who defect”, Mr. Raut said, adding, “There is no fear of law. The government stands exposed.” - PTI

The Nationalist Congress Party(SP) chief Sharad Pawar said the knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan by an intruder at his home in Mumbai shows the law and order situation is deteriorating in Maharashtra. 

“It shows [attack on Khan] that the law and order situation in Maharashtra is deteriorating. Recently, a person was killed in the same area and now this incident. All these things are worrisome,” Mr. Pawar told reporters at Baramati in Pune when asked about the attack on Saif Ali Khan. 

“The State Government, especially the Chief Minister, who holds charge of the Home Department, should pay attention to these things more seriously,” the former Maharashtra Chief Minister said. - PTI

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal slammed the BJP-led Central Government over the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan. 

Adressing a press conference, Mr. Kejriwal said, “When the BJP’s double-engine government can’t ensure the safety of celebrities such as Saif Ali Khan, what can the common people expect? Such attacks are not new. There was a shooting outside actor Salman Khan’s house and the killing of Baba Siddique, who was BJP’s alliance partner. This shows the law and order situation in the country.” 

“The BJP-led Central Government must resign if it can’t protect our borders, country, national capital, and the people of India,” Mr. Kejriwal said. - PTI

“The CCTV visuals of the unidentified intruder who repeatedly stabbed actor Saif Ali Khan inside his apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra area early Thursday (January 16, 2025) morning have been traced on the sixth floor of the building,” police sources said.

The star lives on the 12th floor of Satguru Sharan apartments. As per the sources, the intruder used the staircase to escape after the attack.

Khan’s domestic help, who raised initial alarm after the incident that took place around 2.30 a.m., lodged a police complaint for trespassing and attempt to murder, the sources added.

As per the doctors at the Lilavati Hospital where Khan was rushed, he was out of danger after undergoing a surgery.

While addressing the media on Thursday (January 16, 2025) afternoon, DCP Dixit Gedam said that 1 accused has been identified through the CCTV footage and he used the staircase. None have been arrested so far.

“Ten teams have been formed for the investigation,” he added.

Expressing concern over the attack on Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (January 16, 2025) said she was praying for his speedy recovery.

“It’s very concerning to hear about the attack on noted actor Saif Ali Khan. I pray for his speedy recovery, trusting that the law will take its course and those responsible will be held accountable,” Ms. Banerjee posted on X.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Sharmila Di, Kareena Kapoor, and the entire family during this difficult time,” she added.

An official statement from Saif Ali Khan’s team said that all family members are safe and the police is investigating the incident

In a statement, Saif Ali Khan’s team said that the Bollywood star is “out of danger”. On January 16, 2025 (Thursday) around 2:30 am, Saif reportedly suffered multiple injuries after he was attacked by a knife by an intruder at his residence in Mumbai.

“Saif Ali Khan has come out of surgery and is out of danger. He is currently in recovery and the doctors are monitoring his progress,” said the statement.

The actor was rushed to the Lilavati Hospital at around 3:30 am by his son Ibrahim Ali Khan and another member from his family. Saif’s family thanked the doctors. “We would like to thank Dr. Niraj Uttamani, Dr. Nitin Dange, Dr Leena Jain and the team at Lilavati hospital.”

Saif Ali Khan out of danger, on road to recovery: actor’s team

Saif Ali Khan’s team put out a statement that the Bollywood star is out of danger and is on road to recovery after the knife attack in his residence in Mumbai

Speaking to media, Forensic department officer said, “We have collected the fingerprints from the spot, rest our senior officer will brief.”

After questioning all the housekeepers and staff at Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra residence, the police suspect that the attacker appears to be someone familiar to one of the housekeepers working there.

Bandra Police issued a statement saying an unknown person was found in the bedroom of Saif Ali Khan’s son Jehangir at their residence. 

The house help, Mrs. Ariyama Phillips alias Lima, raised an alarm, following which actor Saif Ali Khan intervened. The unknown person attacked Saif Ali Khan with a sharp object, injuring him. The domestic help was also injured in the incident, the statement added.

After Saif Ali Khan suffered injuries during a burglary attempt at his house, his son Ibrahim Ali Khan rushed him to the hospital along with one member from the actor’s family.

The 23-year-old Ibrahim, Saif’s son from his first marriage to Amrita Singh, rushed to the Satguru Sharan building in Mumbai where the actor stays with his wife Kareena Kapoor Khan. He is learnt to have taken Saif to the Lilavati Hospital by 3:30 am. The incident took place at 2:30 am, according to Saif’s team.

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan suffered 6 stab wounds, two of which were deep, with 1 located near his spine and a foreign object was also identified near his spine, the Lilavati Hospital said in a statement after the latter was attacked by an intruder in his house.

The Hospital also mentioned that the Bollywood actor is currently undergoing surgery under Dr. Nitin Dange, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Dr. Leena Jain, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Nisha Gandhi, Consultant Anaesthesiologist, Dr. Kavita Srinivas, Intensivist, Dr. Manoj Deshmukh, Consultant Radiologist.

Mumbai police is going through CCTV footage from two hours before the incident. Preliminary investigation shows no one entering the house from outside. According to police, the attacker may be present in the building already. 

NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Thursday (January 16, 2025) expressed concern over the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan by an intruder at his home in Mumbai and termed the incident as “worrisome”.

Ms. Sule, who is a friend of Saif Ali Khan’s wife Kareena Kapoor Khan’s family, said the actor was hospitalised and was safe.

Ms. Sule spoke to Saif Ali Khan’s sister-in-law Karisma Kapoor over phone in the presence of mediapersons at Baramati in Pune but declined to share details of the conversation.

“Saif is safe and in hospital. Wait for the official statement from the family and the police,” Ms. Sule told reporters.
