Ferozepur: The counter-intelligence (C-I) wing of the Ferozepur police has busted a criminal module, with the arrest of two members, and recovered a hand grenade, a pistol, and four cartridges on Wednesday.
C-I Ferozepur assistant inspector general of police (AIG) Lakhbir Singh said that the module was operated by Nishan Singh, a UK-based individual involved in illicit activities in Punjab.
The operation began on Jan 8, when the C-I wing, acting on a tip-off, conducted a special operation in Bahadurwala village. The police arrested Jagtar Singh alias Jagga, who was found with a motorcycle and a .32 caliber pistol along with four cartridges. The registration number of the motorcycle had been tampered with.
Meanwhile, Jagtar's associate, Jashanpreet Singh alias Jashan, fled to Maharashtra. Jashanpreet, a resident of Nangal Guru village in Amritsar, was apprehended on Jan 9. During police remand, Jashanpreet led investigators to the recovery of a hand grenade near Harike-Khalra in Tarn Taran district.
The accused revealed that they had planned to target a police officer or a police station in the Amritsar area under the instructions of Nishan Singh, a native of Jauria Kalan village in Gurdaspur, currently residing in the UK. Further investigations have led to the identification of additional suspects, and raids are on way to arrest them. A case has been registered.
