Gurgaon: Decks have been cleared for the construction of a multilevel car parking (MLP) project near Sadar Bazar post office.
The construction will begin in a month. Initially shelved due to land ownership issues with another govt department, the project has now been authorised as the Haryana govt's finance department will allocate Rs 43.66 crore to the MCG for purchasing the land from PWD (B&R).
The state govt will provide these funds from the outstanding stamp duty arrears of Rs 495.95 crore that it needs to pay to the MCG.
MCG executive engineer Ajay Panghal said, "The project will be granted to the private agency which already got the tender. We gave the agency an advance of Rs 2 crore. The project will be replicated as per the design and drawings that we made earlier."
When asked about the timeline of the project, he said, "The project approval has been granted and the funding will initially be routed through the treasury at the DC office before reaching us. Subsequently, we shall forward it to PWD (B&R), who will then allocate the land to us, enabling us to commence construction. The entire process is expected to take a minimum of one month after which the construction will begin."
In 2019, the MCG announced three multilevel car parks in the busy market of Sadar Bazar — one near the post office, another at Kaman Sarai and the third at Sohna Chowk — to decongest the area.
The municipal corporation had previously abandoned the project in Nov 2023 as the land costs were deemed too high. The finance department has now sent a letter to the urban local bodies department granting permission to provide these funds for the purchase of land to commence the project.
The civic body had planned to construct an MLP facility for 200 vehicles in a 3,000 square metre area.
