Chennai Corporation to streamline construction waste removal in all 15 zones

Updated - January 16, 2025 03:06 pm IST - Chennai

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will begin collection and transportation of construction and demolition waste across all 15 zones from January 17, 2025. The system is expected to be streamlined within 4-6 weeks, Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran said in a tweet on Wednesday.

Between January 7 and 13 this year, 5,323 metric tons of construction debris were removed in GCC limits during an intensive clean-up drive. The initiative, launched by Mayor R. Priya, included efforts in seven zones using 59 vehicles and machinery.

To ensure efficiency, designated dumping points have been established in all zones to prevent illegal disposal, according to a press release. Waste from these zones will be collected and transported to Perungudi and Kodungaiyur sites. The GCC’s comprehensive plan aims to enhance waste management infrastructure across the city within the specified timeline, release stated.
