The Coimbatore City Police have ordered 27 history-sheeters to stay outside the jurisdiction of the city for six months as per Section 51-A of the Madras City Police Act, 1888.
According to the police, they had received complaints from people affected by the crimes involving the 27 persons. They were afraid of approaching the police with complaints and hesitating to appear before courts as witnesses, due to the presence of the accused in the city and fear of them.
As per the instructions of Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, show-cause notices were served on the 27 persons under Section 51-A (power to direct removal of persons from city in special cases) of the Madras City Police Act. They appeared before Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) N. Devanathan and submitted their explanations.
However, according to the police, direct and discreet inquiries conducted on the 27 persons showed that they continued to engage in criminal activities. Based on this, the Commissioner ordered the 27 persons to stay away from Coimbatore city for six months with effect from January 13.
