Mountain lion sightings in Northern California prompt safety warning, road closures

(FOX40.COM) — A public safety warning has been issued after reports of mountain lion sightings in Northern California, according to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the sightings have been in the Upper Main Street area of Downieville. On Monday morning, one of three lions was killed while attacking a dog. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife responded and is actively investigating the situation.

“Out of an (abundance) of caution, the county park on Upper Main Street in Downieville will be closed until further notice,” SCSO said. “This includes the playground, tennis courts, and basketball court.”

Anyone in the area who sees a mountain lion can call SCSO at (530) 289-3700 or email wildlifeconflict@sierracounty.ca.gov. Deputies asked the public, if possible, to include photographs or videos in the report to assist with the investigation.

Tips for staying safe from mountain lions

Officials provided the public with some tips to remain safe while they investigate the mountain lion sightings.

• Keep pets indoors, especially at night.
• If pets must be taken outside, keep them on a leash and close by.
• Avoid hiking or jogging alone, especially at dawn, dusk, or night.

Mountain lion encounters

If a person encounters a mountain lion, officials offered additional safety tips.

• Stay calm and do not run.
• Try to appear larger by raising arms and speaking firmly.
• Slowly back away, giving the lion an opportunity to retreat.
• If the lion acts aggressively, throw objects, yell, and fight back if attacked.
