Lucknow: A tiger that has caused panic in the Rahmankheda area of Malihabad is believed to have strayed from Lakhimpur Kheri, wildlife experts say. According to the forest officers, the tiger is thought to have crossed the Bheta River in Sitapur before venturing into the forests of Malihabad and finally reaching Rahmankheda.
A senior forest officer explained that the recent killing of two nilgais (blue bulls) in the area further indicates the presence of a tiger, as leopards typically target smaller prey. Tigers, however, prefer larger animals like nilgais, and their presence is often marked by such attacks. "Tigers usually follow water bodies and may alter their course while on a hunting spree," the officer added.
Efforts to track & monitor big cat
The forest department has deployed two additional patrolling teams that are actively inspecting camera traps, tracking pugmarks, and engaging with local residents to raise awareness about safety precautions.
During a recent inspection, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF) Renu Singh and Lucknow DFO Sitanshu Pandey discovered fresh tiger pugmarks in Katauli village. However, no fresh evidence was found in other parts of Rahmankheda. To improve monitoring, Singh has instructed the mapping of these pugmarks to accurately assess the tiger's movement patterns.
Community awareness and vigilance
In the wake of the tiger's presence, forest officials have intensified awareness campaigns in nearby villages such as Katauli and Haluapur. Residents are being educated on safety measures to avoid potential conflict with the animal. The forest teams are also maintaining strict vigilance to monitor the tiger's movements and are prepared for its safe rescue, should the need arise.
Advanced Surveillance systems deployed
To enhance surveillance, the forest department has installed 12 camera traps and two trapping cages in Rahmankheda and surrounding areas. Thermal drone cameras are also being used for continuous monitoring. This high-tech surveillance is crucial in tracking the tiger's movements and minimising the risk of human-wildlife conflict.
