Dibrugarh: Members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) held a two-hour demonstration in Dhemaji town on Tuesday, voicing their discontent over the deteriorating condition of the town's roads, footpaths and drainage system. The protest, which drew significant attention from local residents, highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure repairs that have been neglected for years.
The protestors expressed frustration over the state of public infrastructure, alleging that approximately 80% of roads, footpaths, and drains have fallen into disrepair under the jurisdiction of the Dhemaji town committee.
"The condition of our town's infrastructure has become unbearable for the common citizens. The poor state of the roads is affecting everyone, especially students and the elderly. Basic civic amenities like proper roads and functional drainage systems have become a luxury in Dhemaji, and this neglect must end immediately," AJYCP Dhemaji town unit president Keshab Das said.
The AJYCP said the situation has become particularly concerning with footpaths caving in at numerous locations, posing significant safety risks to pedestrians. "We have repeatedly raised these concerns at various levels, but no concrete action has been taken. The deteriorating infrastructure not only affects daily life but also hampers economic activities in our town," AJYCP Dhemaji town unit general secretary Bisharjya Pathak said.
Following the protest, the AJYCP leaders submitted a memorandum to district commissioner Rahul Suresh Javir, addressed to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging immediate intervention to address the infrastructure crisis.
