Chandigarh: Two days after the Punjab State Women Commission issued a notice to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami for his alleged offensive comments about rebel Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bibi Jagir Kaur, Dhami appeared before commission chairperson Raj Lali Gill and tendered an apology.
Gill told mediapersons that although Dhami apologised for his remark, she would discuss with Bibi Jagir Kaur and then decide on the future course of action. “I would urge Bibi Jagir Kaur to come to the commission. Earlier, when I spoke to her over the phone, she expressed strong objection to the remarks,” she said.
In a written reply to the commission through his lawyer, Dhami said that he apologises for what he said, adding that he has the highest regard for women and wouldn’t say anything to hurt their self-esteem. He added that he inadvertently made some remarks during a telephonic conversation and realised his mistake soon after.
Earlier last week, Dhami released a video to apologise for his “outburst” against three-time former SGPC president Jagir Kaur while speaking to a web channel over the phone.
