Jaipur: On the fourth day of National School of Drama's theatre festival at RIC here, NSD Repertory on Monday staged Mahashweta Devi's play ‘Bayen', under direction of Usha Ganguly.
‘Bayen' portrays the social and economic disparities in rural India through the story of Chandini Dasi. Dasi, who is forced to bury dead animals, marries Malinder, but under societal pressure, Malinder ostracises her by calling her ‘Bayen' (witch). This ostracism strips Dasi of her motherhood and dignity. The play concludes with Dasi's sacrifice and her son, Bhagirath, becoming a symbol of self-respect for the new generation. tnn
