The government has deferred the introduction of bills related to the One Nation One Election initiative, originally scheduled for Monday, December 16, to later this week, according to The Indian Express.

Earlier, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal was expected to present the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

On Thursday, December 12, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the constitutional amendment bill aimed at implementing simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections.

The Cabinet approved two draft legislations, including a bill to amend laws governing three Union territories with legislative assemblies to align them with the proposed constitutional amendment.

The constitutional amendment bill seeks to establish provisions for holding Lok Sabha and state legislative assembly elections simultaneously.

While a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind had recommended conducting municipal and panchayat elections alongside national and state polls in a phased manner, the Cabinet has decided to hold off, for now, on addressing the framework for local body elections.
