Guwahati: Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration, district disaster management authority (DDMA), rescue agencies, civil defence organisation and fire and emergency services will conduct the second phase of training programmes in the remaining Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) wards, to equip residents with disaster management skills.
Beginning from Dec 23, the training program will take place in 40 GMC wards and continue till Jan. So far, the training has been completed in 20 wards.
Citizens will undergo training on basics of emergency managements exercises, search and rescue, first aid measures and mock drills. DDMA project officer Kaustav Talukdar said the training will prepare residents of all age group to tackle emergency situations. "The trainings will be simple and easy to follow, so that during emergency the residents can help rescue personnel, easing some of their burden," the officer added.
civil defence organisation junior assistant deputy controller Dipak Medhi said the training will focus on teaching civilians simple and practical methods, which can be easily executed. "This training focus on methods to repurpose household items into useful rescue material," Medhi added.
"For instances, bamboos and blankets can be turned into makeshift stretchers. Bottles and ropes can be used to make floatation devices. These methods will be designed to make it effective and accessible for citizens to respond to emergency situations," the assistant deputy controller said.
He added that in first aid support training the residents will be taught the procedures of CPR, along with methods of improvised splint, which means to provide support to the person during the time of a fracture.
The training, which began in Sept, aims to assist rescue personnels by leveraging their knowledge and skills. During the period, a ward level-task force was also formed on social media platforms to bridge the communication gap between the community and response teams.
