Multiple lanes closed on I-805 following major crash, hazmat spill

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities have closed multiple lanes on northbound Interstate 805 Monday ahead of the morning commute following a crash that led to spillage of a hazardous material, according to California Highway Patrol logs.

The crash was first reported just after 11 p.m. Sunday near the I-805 connector with State Route 52.

Details about what led up to the collision are unknown, although CHP logs indicate it involved a semi-truck and a sedan. Whether anyone in either vehicle sustained injuries is unknown.

The crash left a significant amount of debris, including what appears to be some kind of oil, on the freeway, leading law enforcement to implement a hard closure to all but the far left lane just before 11:30 p.m.

As of 8 a.m., the right three lanes of the roadway have been blocked as crews work to clean up the spill of hazardous materials, Caltrans said. Two lanes have been reopened, but CHP said clean up may take upwards of eight hours.

A SigAlert went into effect just after midnight for traffic congestion in the area. Traffic appears to be backed up along I-805 for several miles, stretching down past the Interstate 8 overpass. Vehicles appear to be moving through the area at speeds of 11 to 13 miles per hour.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
