Dibrugarh: A speeding motorcycle ran over a sub-inspector of Assam Police Radio Organisation (APRO) along NH-37 at Moran in Charaideo district Monday, killing him on the spot.
The deceased officer, identified as Sunil Dehingia, was out for a morning walk with his friend Mukhen Gogoi around 5am when the motorcycle, bearing registration number AS-06-A-L7736, hit them from behind. Dehingia died instantly, while Gogoi sustained injuries in the accident.
"The impact was severe, and both the pedestrians were caught completely unawares. The motorcycle was going at a high speed when it struck them," a witness said.
The two motorcyclists, identified as Bibhuti Baruah and Jintu Murari, were thrown off the vehicle due to the impact. All the injured were promptly transported to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh for emergency treatment.
"Sub-inspector Dehingia was a dedicated officer. His sudden demise is a great loss to the department. We have initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the unfortunate accident. The motorcycle has been seized, and necessary legal procedures are being followed," a police officer from Moranhat police station said.
The officer said Dehingia had recently been transferred to Seopon police station from Moranhat. He had visited the Moranhat police station just a day before the accident for official work. Dehingia's body will be released to his family following the completion of post-mortem procedures, he added.
