Coimbatore: A 28-year-old woman and her one-year-old son died after they were run over by a truck on Thanneerpandal Road in the city late on Friday night. Police said the accident took place when the woman and her younger son were travelling on a motorcycle with her husband to the Singanallur bus stand.
The deceased have been identified as A Baby Bharathi, and her son Lithish, of Raju Naidu Layout in Peelamedu.
Traffic Investigation Wing (TIW-East) police said Azhaguraja, 30, from Manapparai in Trichy district, was riding the bike with his wife and son riding pillion. Around 10.50pm when they neared Maheswari Nagar fourth junction on Thanneerpandal Road a speeding motorcycle from the opposite direction hit the handlebar of Azhaguraja's motorcycle, causing him to lose control. All three fell off the motorcycle in the impact. The woman and her son were run over by a truck which was also coming from the opposite direction. They died on the spot, while Azhaguraja suffered minor injuries and was rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment.
TIW (East) police inspector Thangamani and team sent the two bodies to the CMCH for postmortem. The bodies were later handed over to their family on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the truck driver and are investigating further.
