SMAT Final 2024 Highlights: Mumbai beats Madhya Pradesh by five wickets to win second title

Tripuresh is back. FOUR! Length ball and Shedge slaps the ball towards long on. Full ball and Shedge lofts the ball straight. Just one run needed now. SIX! What a way to finish things off! Mumbai wins by five wickets. 

Venky is back. SIX! Shedge smacks a huge six over midwicket region. Mumbai is on the charge. Wide ball. SIX! Slog sweep towards square leg. What a shot, huge hit. Outside off and wide. MP reviews the wide. Not a wide. Review successful. Ankolekar takes a double. Mumbai is in complete control. 

Kartikeya. Shedge begins the over with a four towards square leg. Full toss punished. He now gets a double towards leg side. Late cut and four! Very smart shot by Shedge. SIX! Ankolekar smacks the ball straight. 17 runs from the over. Tide turns towards Mumbai again. 

Shukla. OUT! Surya is gone. Tries to sweep, gets a top edge and is caught at short fine leg. Big wicket! Surya is gone for 48 off 35 balls. Three singles off the over. 

Kartikeya. OUT! Dube is gone. Tries to slog the ball, skies it and is caught inside the circle. Good start to the over for MP. 

Atharva Ankolekar is the new man in. Off the mark with a single. Good over so far, two balls left. Surya makes room on the leg side, misses the ball but keeper also misses it. Four byes. Six runs and a wicket in that over. 

Batham. SIX! Surya with the ‘Soopla’ shot. Picked the length ball and sent behind square leg. Dube cuts JUST past point for four. The fielder dived full stretch but wasn’t able to grab it. Another pickup shot by Surya and another six. 18 runs off the over. 

Venkatesh Iyer is back. Two slower bouncers and Surya isn’t able to put bat behind the ball. Down the leg wide. Another wide. OUT! Rahane is gone. He makes room to go over extra cover but the fielder in the deep grabs the ball. Rahane scored 37 off 30 balls.

Shivam Dube now. He is off the mark with a four over cover. 

Shukla is back. Textbook sweep shot gets Surya another four. Seven runs from the over. 79 runs required off 54 balls. 

Kartikeya. Rahane reverse sweeps and gets a four! Another boundary. Down the leg and Rahane easily guides it towards fine leg. Another four! This time Suryakumar cuts towards deep point. 14 runs from the over. 

Batham is back. Surya ramps the ball over fine leg for four! Typical Suryakumar Yadav hit. SIX! Full ball, SKY lofts the ball over mid-off and clears the rope. 

Kumar Kartikeya into the attack. Beats Surya with a googly. Short ball and Surya pulls the ball towards fine leg for four. He now beats Rahane as well with a googly on consecutive deliveries. 

Venkatesh Iyer into the attack. Three singles off the first three balls. Surya hits the ball behind square leg, a good effort in the deep saves the boundary. Six runs off the over. 

Rahul Batham into the attack. Just one run off the first three balls. Another dot. Suryakumar yet to get off the mark, three balls in. He takes a single off his fourth ball. Rahane gets a leading edge, Patidar dives to his left but isn’t able to grab the ball. Fantastic effort though. 

Tripuresh for his second. SIX! Full ball and Shreyas lofts over long on. OUT! Shreyas falls. Wide ball, Shreyas tries to go over cover fielder but is caught inside the circle. Suryakumar Yadav at the crease. Seven runs and a wicket in that over. 

Shivam Shukla into the attack. Starts off with a wide. Beats Shreyas Iyer with an arm ball. On the hips and Shreyas now guides it towards fine leg for four. Another boundary, full and Shreyas hits it over cover fielder for four. 

Avesh. Rahane begins the over with a cut past point for four. Another boundary! Half-tracker pulled towards deep midwicket. Rahane now hits the ball over cover and gets a double. 11 runs from the over. 

Tripuresh Singh from the other end. Shaw takes a single off the first ball. SIX! Shaw gets down on one knee and slashes the ball over deep third. OUT! Width on offer and Shaw hits the ball straight to deep cover. Shaw goes for 10 off six balls. 

Shreyas Iyer at the crease. Off the mark with a single. 

Avesh Khan with the new ball. Prithvi Shaw takes a single off the first ball and Ajinkya Rahane gives him the strike back on the next. Five singles off first five balls. Rahane cuts towards deep point and gets a double. 

Slow overrate means Mumbai will have to keep one fielder inside the circle. Kumar Kartikeya at the crease. Shardul begins with a dot. Kartikeya gets a single off the second ball. Patidar slashes, gets a thick outside for four! SIX! No look pull shot over fine leg. Outstanding hit. A dot off the fifth ball. Wide, way past the outside crease. Mumbai has reviewed. Third umpire reverses the decision. It is not a wide. Patidar is not happy. He’s still there at the crease. Patidar reviewed again and umpire now realises the ball pitched outside the return crease. Wide. SIX! Full toss and Patidar slams the ball straight. What an over and a finish. Patidar unbeaten on 82 off 40 balls. 

Shedge to bowl the penultimate over. Patidar takes a single off the second ball. Shukla gets his captain back on strike. SIX! Patidar picks the ball over square leg for a massive hit. Another SIX! This time lofted cover drive way back into the stands. Waist height no ball and Patidar sends his partner back however Shukla might be run out at the non-strikers’ end. Third umpire checks and it is a fair delivery! So Patidar will be at the non-strikers’ end in the next over. 

Dias. Batham smashes a huuuge six over long on to begin the over. Another boundary! Half-tracker, Batham now pulls it towards square leg. OUT! Batham now tries to go over extra cover but gets caught in the deep. A good knock by Batham, scores 19 off 14 balls. 

Tripuresh Singh the new batter. OUT! First ball, gets an edge and is caught behind. Shivam Shukla to face the hat-trick ball. Leaves the ball. Just 10 runs and two wickets in that over. 

Dube for his final over. Patidar tries to ramp, doesn’t time it and only gets a single. Shreyas Iyer has made sure Patidar doesn’t face a lot of spin but that hasn’t impacted his scoring. Good over so far by Dube. Batham slogs, doesn’t time but the ball falls just short of Rahane at deep midwicket. 

Royston Dias is back. Two singles off first two balls. Patidar shuffles across and paddle sweeps the ball behind square leg for four. Another four! Half-tracker, Patidar pulls in front of square leg. Single and Patidar brings up his fifty in 28 balls! Superb knock. 

Shedge. Batham takes a single off the first ball. Patidar gives him the strike back. Three runs off first four balls. SIX! What a shot. Full ball and Patidar just lofts the ball over cover region. 10 more runs from the over. 

Dube for his third over. SIX! Patidar begins the over with a maximum. Pulls the short ball over square leg. Full ball, wide, and Patidar opens the blade towards square region and gets a double. Rahul Batham takes a single off the last ball. 

Suryansh Shedge into the attack. Iyer cuts the length straight to backward point. Rahane catches it but it might be one bounce. Umpires are checking. Umpire looks convinced that the ball hasn’t bounced, and Iyer has to go! Big wicket. Iyer goes for 17 off nine balls. Shedge has struck off his first ball. 

Rahul Batham in at seven. FOUR! Patidar smartly cuts the length ball towards deep third. Eight runs and a wicket in that over. 

Shardul is back. Patidar welcomes him with a four over mid-off. Picked the length and smashed it to perfection. Now Venkatesh Iyer charges down the track and lofts the ball over long-off for six. Width on offer and Patidar now upper cuts the ball over point for four. Slight miscommunication between Patidar and Iyer but the captain is back into the crease on time. 16 runs from the over. 

Dube continues. On the pads, Patidar guides the ball towards fine leg for a double. A good effort, the ball was under the fielder’s body but third umpire thinks it was good enough not to be called a four. Boundaries aren’t coming regularly. MP batters need to put more power into their shots. Seven runs off the over. 

Ankolekar for his last over. Patidar skies the ball but luckily for him, the ball falls in no-man’s land. However, Venkatesh Iyer, who was trying to steal a single, was sent back and got to the crease at the right time and survives as well. Iyer is off the mark with a paddle sweep for four. Takes a double off the next ball towards cover region. Nine runs from the over. 

Shivam Dube into the attack. Three singles off the first three balls. A leading edge off Patidar’s bat but falls in no-man’s land, single. OUT! Subhranshu Senapati falls too. Length ball, Senapati pulls straight to long-on. 

Ankolekar for his third over. Just one run from the first three balls. OUT! Harpreet is caught. Goes for a slog sweep but doesn’t time it. Suryakumar Yadav runs from long-on and dives in front to grab the ball. Harpreet scores 5 off 23 balls. 

Rajat Patidar at the crease now. Off the mark with a single. Three singles and a wicket in that over. 

Kotian continues. Starts off with two dots. SIX! Finally, Subhranshu powers his lofted cover drive and clears the fence. Nine runs from that over. 

Ankolekar is back. Too many singles, Mumbai bowlers are dominating so far in the PowerPlay. Harpreet attempts a slog sweep but misses it. Just two runs off the last over of the PowerPlay. 

Tanush Kotian into the attack. Four! Bhatia pulls the short ball towards deep square leg. Seven runs off the first five ball of the over. A single to end the over. 

Shardul continues. Around the wicket to Harpreet, fuller delivery and the batter lofts him over mid-on for four. Ball falls just short of the rope. LBW appeal but denied by the umpire. No review taken. A quiet over after that boundary, still a ball left though. A single to end the over. 

Harpreet Singh Bhatia is the new man. 

Royston Dias into the attack. Too wide down the leg for left-handed Bhatia, wide. Consecutive down the leg wides. On the pads, leg byes for four towards fine leg. MP batters looking for singles off each delivery. SIX! Senapati finishes the over with a maximum. A lofted drive over extra cover. 

Shardul Thakur from the other end. Hint of movement away from the right hander for Shardul. OUT! Full ball, moving away from Arpit, who goes for the lofted drive, gets a thick outside edge straight to deep backward point. 

Subhransu Senapati is off the mark with a quick single. OUT! Harsh Gawali is gone as well. Length ball, Gawali punches straight to cover fielder. Two wickets in one over. 

Mumbai begins with a spinner, Atharva Ankolekar. Arpit Gaud drives the ball towards long-off to off the mark. Harsh Gawali too is off the mark with a single. Five singles in the first over. 

“Good conditions for batting. Not many cracks on the pitch, the boundaries are short, batters will have a good time,” reckons Vijay Dahiya.
