Dibrugarh: A pharmacy salesman was arrested Saturday night for attempting to extort Rs 30 lakh from a construction firm posing as a member of the banned militant outfit, Ulfa-I.
The accused has been identified by police as Dhrubajyoti Nath, an employee of Niramoy Medical in Majuli. He allegedly targeted Ragi Ku Enterprises, an Arunachal Pradesh-based construction company currently involved in building the Majuli University of Culture.
"The accused served an extortion note to the construction company three days ago, following which they immediately reported the matter to us. During investigation, we found that the man who is a pharmacy employee was behind the extortion attempt," a police officer said.
During interrogation, Nath confessed to creating the fake letter and attempting to extort money because of financial desperation.
"The accused admitted to designing a fake letterhead and forging the signature of a senior Ulfa-I leader. He designed the letterhead after studying various news channel reports featuring the Ulfa-I," the police officer said.
The police is continuing its investigation to determine whether Nath had any accomplice or had attempted similar attempts in the past.
