India vs Australia Highlights, 3rd Test Day 2: Smith, Head tons take AUS to 405/7 at Stumps; Bumrah picks fifer

Akash Deep replaces Jadeja. Carey tucks a length ball to the legside for a single. Takes the leading edge of Starc but flies on the bounce to deep point. Four runs from the last over of the day. 

Australia end the day at 405/7.

Siraj to Starc, pushes at a full ball and will pick up two to backward point. A single to deep point brings up the team’s 400.

Four!! Full on the stumps from Jadeja, Carey paddles it fine for a boundary. Six!! Finishes the over with a big slog over long on for six. 

Siraj continues. Back of a length on off stump, Cummins punches to the offside sweeper and returns for a second run. Short ball, Cummins ducks and it flies past Pant and to the fence for a boundary. Called a wide as well. WICKET!! Siraj finally picks up a wicket. Back of a length again, feathered to the keeper.

Siraj to Carey, Cummins puts in a dive at the strikers end to make the ground, replays suggest he still have been short if Siraj’s throw was on target. Four!! Banged in short, Carey tennis forehands it over mid on for a boundary. Four!! Carey steers a wide one backward of point for a boundary. 

Nitish continues. He overpitches to Cummins, who drives it past mid off. Akash Deep cuts it before it hits the fence but the batters run FOUR nonetheless.

Siraj back into the attack. Carey prances down the track and creams the fifth delivery through covers, three runs. A single for Cummins earlier in the over.

Nitish replaces Bumrah. Cummins punches past the bowler to pick a single. Carey with an off drive to add another run to his tally. Cummins slashes outside off, gets a single to third man. Two runs for Carey through fine leg makes it five off the over.

Cummins facing Akash, a single to fine leg as Cummins shuffles across and nudges this delivery from around the wicket. Carey once again charges down on the final delivery and gets two runs over covers.

Bumrah goes for a short-ball ploy against Cummins. There is a short leg in place and he bangs the first two deliveries short. Just one run off that over.

Akash to Cummins, a single to start the over. Carey gets a couple on the second delivery before stepping out and driving through extra covers for FOUR on the final ball.

Bumrah to continue. FOUR! A fraction too wide from Bumrah and Carey dispatches it through covers. FOUR for Cummins! On the pads and Cummins puts his wrists to use, clipping this past mid on. Ten runs from the over.

Akash again. Carey picks a single off the first delivery. Pat Cummins off the mark with a single to fine leg. Carey comes down the wicket but misses his cover drive. Three runs from the over.

WICKET! Marsh gets an edge to second slip. Bumrah has his fourth wicket.

Akash to Head, one run through point and Head brings up his 150! CHANCE! Marsh hits back at the bowler but fluffs it in the air. Akash tries to get a hand to it but cannot make it stick in his hand. It has enough power to run down the ground to allow three runs. Marsh miscues another pull shot but the ball lands short of Shubman Gill at deep fine leg. Seven runs from the over.

Bumrah to Marsh, angled in to the right-hander, defended back to the bowler. Shortens the length a touch, but same line, defended solidly by Marsh. Goes short, Marsh looks to pull but doesn’t make contact again. 

Mitch Marsh the new man in. Head takes a single of the first ball to hand him the strike. Marsh looks to pull Akash Deep behind square, doesn’t get bat on it. Clips a full one to deep fine off the pad. 

Bumrah returns. Length ball on off, clipped behind square on the legside for one. Full on the stumps to Smith, pushed to mid on for a single. WICKET!! Smith departs after his hundred! Nicks a full one to Rohit at slip.

Akash Deep from the other end. Full on the pads, flicked to midwicket for one. Four!! A touch too full, Smith drives dowb the ground for a boundary. Full on the pads, turned to deep fine and Smith brings up his hundred! Four!! Full outside off, Head edges his drive through the gap in the cordon for a boundary. 

Here comes Bumrah with the new Kookaburra! Four!! Full on the pads, flicked through midwicket for a boundary. Quite anti-climatic. Full and wide, Head tries to carve it through gully where Jaiswal holds onto a good catch. Onfield umpires think it is a bump-ball and the replays confirm it. 

Siraj to continue. Manages to catch the edge as Smith looked to defend without any feet movement, falls well short of the slip fielder. 

Jadeja continues. Five singles from the over. One over away from the new ball.

Siraj to Head, short outside offstump, cut to deep point for a couple. Four!! Was turning out to be a decent over, Head drives a full ball through long off for a boundary. 

Smith looks to pull a short of length ball from Siraj, doesn’t bounce as much as he expects. Jadeja continues from the other end. Four!! Smith creams the drive off a full, wide ball to the boundary at cover. 

Four!! Full outside off from Jadeja, Smith bisects the two catching cover fielders and finds the boundary. The 200-run partnership is up between the two.

Nitish to Smith, overpitched outside off, driven through cover for a couple. Four!! Full outside off again, driven through covers for a boundary this time. 

Jadeja to Head. A touch too short, Head makes room and cuts it forward of point for a boundary. Four!! Smith steps down the track and lofts Jadeja over his head for a boundary. 

Nitish Reddy from the other end. Four!! Full and straight, Head drives it down the ground for a boundary. Chance!! Head edges one to the cordon where Rohit puts it down after a dive to the right. Four!! Smith brings out the cut shot to find the fence backward of point. 250 up for Australia.

The Indians are back after a well deserved break following a punishing session 2. Need to break this partnership that has swelled to 159. 

Jadeja resumes. Two quick ones fired into the legs. Ohh! Inside edge as he looks to rock back and cut, goes past the stumps and Head will get a couple.

AUS vs IND, 3rd Test: Travis Head scores century in Brisbane, records back-to-back hundreds against India

Middle-order batter Travis Head continued his fine form in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with another century on Day 2 of the Brisbane Test on Sunday.

Australia establishes an advantage in the afternoon session. 130 runs added in this session. Travis Head led the charge as he notched up another century in this BGT. Steve Smith too got a fifty to break the series of low scores.

Nitish to bowl the final over of the session. Three singles from it.

Bumrah to Smith, one run to fine leg. HUNDRED FOR TRAVIS HEAD! On his pads and Head flicks it through mid on for three runs. 

Nitish to Smith. FOUR! Smith cuts through the vacant cover region. Nitish tries a yorker but Smith digs it out. A single off the final delivery.

Bumrah back into the attack. Head on strike. FOUR! Head plays across the line and beats the mid on. A single on the next delivery takes him to 98. Smith through covers for three runs.

Nitish Kumar Reddy back into attack. CHANCE! Head cuts and just misses Kohli stationed at cover point, FOUR runs. A single to square leg on the fifth delivery. FOUR runs! Nitish goes short and Smith pulls it over mid wicket. 

Jadeja for his ninth over. FOUR! Slight width, Head cuts and picks another boundary. Head late cuts another delivery for two runs. Nine runs from the over.

Siraj to Head. FOUR! Head uses the bounce to slice the ball over the slips again. A cut to deep third man next. Head gets a single to backward point. Three dots to end the over.

Jadeja to Head. Fractionally wide from Jadeja, and Head cuts it through covers for three runs. FIFTY for Smith, gets it with a single to mid on. Seven runs from the over.

Siraj to Head. FOUR! Another bouncer from Siraj, Head goes for a pull, gets a top edge which flies past fine leg. FOUR more! Head slashes outside off and gets an edge over slips. The luck going Australia’s way. A single to end the over.

Jadeja again. Three singles off it.

Siraj to Head, FOUR! A short delivery and Head ramps it over the slip cordon. Siraj goes slightly wider, Head punches to deep point for one run. Smith drives through covers for another run. Head finishes the over with a flick to deep square leg for a single.

Jadeja for his sixth over. Head punches to long off for one. Smith charges down for the second but ultimately defends as Jadeja pulls his length back. The third is cut to covers, no run. Defends the last three deliveries.

Siraj to Smith, two runs, on the pads again and Smith trickles this down to fine leg off his thigh pad. Smith is nearly squared up, looks to work it on the on side but gets a leading egde through point, good enough to get two more

Jadeja to Head. A maiden over. Head looks to make room through the six deliveries, but Jadeja hugs the middle-and-leg line, forcing Head to play straight. 

Siraj back into the attack. Fifty!! Head brings up his fifty off 72 balls with a couple to midwicket. Full on the stumps to Smith, flicks it just past Rahul at short midwicket. 

Big appeals for caught behind, and Jadeja looks confident. Head suggests it was bat on pad and he’s spot on. Four!! A touch fuller, lofted over mid off’s head for a boundary. Four!! Wider this time, lofted over extra cover this time. 

Akash to Head, goes down low and cuts it to deep point for one. Full on the stumps, inside edge rolls to sqaure leg. Four!! Slightly short and wide, Smith stands up and cuts it through point for four. 

Jadeja to Head. Goes on the backfoot and punches one to long off for a single. 

Akash to Head, slightly wide, Head cuts it to deep point for one. Full on the stumps to Smith, clipped through midwicket for three. Beats Smith on the outside edge again. 

Jadeja continues. Head almost hands a chance to backward short leg. Falls just short of the fielder there. 

Four!! Akash Deep to Smith, overpitched on the stumps, driven straight down the ground for four. Appeals for caught behind, nothing from the umpire. Has beaten Smith twice in two balls now. Full on the stumps, appeals for lbw this time. Not given on field and India reviews. No bat involved but the wickets are missing. One review burned.

Jadeja into the attack. Full on the pads, clipped to deep fine for a couple. Extra bounce as Head looks to flick a legstump ball. Four!! Short and down legside and punished to the fence for a boundary through fine leg. 

Bumrah to Head, back of a length on off, defended off the toes. Four!! Short on the body, carved over the cordon for a boundary. Five from the over. 

Akash to Smith, angled in, takes the inside half of the bat and trickles to the legside. Just a run off a no-ball in the over. 

Bumrah to Smith, zips a bit more than he expects and raps him on the glove. Another single down to fine leg for Smith. 

Akash Deep to Head, full on the stumps, clipped through midwicket for a couple. Slightly wide, cut to deep point for a single. Smith shoulders arms again, rapped on the pads but well outside off this time. 

Bumrah to continue after the Lunch interval. Full on off stump, Smith prods forward and defends to mid off. Full again, beats the attempted drive from Smith. Four!! Inside edge and just past the grasp of a diving Pant! Clips one to deep fine for a single. Head keeps strike with a single off the last ball.

A shared session this. Australia gets 76 runs at the cost of three wickets. India had its tail up with the fall of Marnus Labuschagne but Travis Head (20*) and a dogged Steve Smith (25*) have ensured Australia is still in with a fight. Earlier in the morning, Jasprit Bumrah was on the mark yet again to account for openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney.

A bit of an injury scare for Mohammed Siraj too but he’s back on the field now and looks fine to bowl in the second session.

Akash to Head, two runs through point off the first delivery. Akash goes slightly straighter on the next delivery, hits him on the pad too but off an inside edge, one run taken. Smith flicks off his pad and gets a single through mid wicket. Akash finishes the over with a bouncer.

Bumrah again. Smith picks a single through square leg. Head square drives the next to deep point for another single. That’s 100 up for Australia.

Akash to Head. Multiple play-and-misses from Head. Akash is floating it outside the off-stump line, and Head in his trademark fashion is throwing his hadns at it. Beating the outside edge. A maiden over.

Bumrah to Head. Starts the over with a no ball. A bouncer next, Head ducks. Head nudges the fourth delivery to third man for another single, it is a no ball too which adds another run to Australia’s total.

Akash to Head. He punches the third delivery to deep point for one run. Smith is happy to leave the remaining deliveries, making it just the single off the over.

Bumrah back into the attack. Travis Head facing him. Bumrah comes over the wicket to the leftie, flicks it to fine leg for one. An inside edge for Smith to fine leg, a single. FOUR! Driven through covers by Head. Three runs on the next with a pull, Head’s intentions are clear, he’s not going to wait around.

A slight drizzle as Siraj loads up for another over. Smith shuffles across and works the second delivery away to fine leg for two runs. Siraj has called for the physio with some discomfort in his left knee. And he is going off the field. Akash Deep to continue.

He hits Smith on the pads first ball and India makes a loud appeal for leg before. Another inside edge saves him. 

Nitish again. FOUR! Head gets width to free his arms, whacks this past short cover. A single to point on the next delivery. Smith picks another single through square leg. Nitish bowls way down the leg on the final delivery. Head chases but misses and India makes half-an-appeal for caught behind. Rohit is convinced there is something on that but is talked out of a review by Pant.

Siraj to Smith. A review by India for leg before. Smith shoulders arms to an inswinger again. This one does a bit too much and raps him on the backfoot. The ball tracker shows the ball is clipping the off stump but the umpire’s call saves Smith. Another close call as Smith inside edges onto his pads. Travis Head gets off the mark with a clip to fine leg.

Nitish for his fifth over. On the pads to Smith, he flicks and gets three past mid on. WICKET! Marnus edges to second slip. Full and wide and Marnus indulges in a drive, gets a thick outside edge to Kohli.

And there’s a growing murmur taking over The Gabba. It is India’s nemesis Travis Head walking out at No. 5. Four dot balls to start off his innings.

Siraj to Smith, appeals for a leg before. Smith again shuffles across and is hit on the pad by a delivery angling into the leg stump. It hit him on the knee roll and India decides against a review. One leg bye taken.

Some cheeky banter between Marnus and Siraj. Siraj goes and switches the bails on the stumps at the striker’s end. Marnus waits a moment before switching them back into their original place.

Marnus clips the fifth delivery through square leg for two.

Nitish to continue. He strays on the pads and Marnus flicks it through square leg for two runs. Four runs saved by Bumrah. Nitish pitches full and Marnus on drives which Bumrah dives to his left at mid on and stops.

Siraj to Smith now, bangs this one short, Smith pulls and gets a couple through mid wicket. ALMOST! Siraj pitches this delivery full and on the stumps, Smith misses his flick and is struck on the pad but off an inside edge. 

Nitish overpitches to Smith who leans in on this drive down the ground. A diving stop by Akash Deep keeps this to three runs. Just the three off this over.

Siraj to Marnus, inside edge but onto the pad. Nearly chops it on. Marnus living dangerously, he shoulders arms to another inswinger to see the ball miss the off stump by inches. Another maiden.

Nitish to Smith. He gets him on the pad, pitches on off and seams away from the right hander. But Smith is shuffling across which means this one was going away from the off stump. A maiden over from Nitish.

Siraj to Marnus, one run through the point region off an outside edge. A wayward bouncer goes down leg and flies over Pant’s gloves, FOUR byes. Smith tucks away the fifth delivery to fine leg for a single.

Nitish Kumar Reddy into the attack. Two runs off the final delivery through square leg. Nitish sticks to full length through the over, gets a hint of swing as well. Smith is patient enough to not poke outside off. The one dleivery he gets on the pads he flicks for a couple.

Siraj into the attack. Labuchagne jumps up and leaves the short of length ball outside off. That jumped off the wicket and almost went around shoulder height past Labuschagne. Another short of a length ball that sears off the pitch, Labuschagne lets it go. Big appeal of lbw after the batter offers no shot. Rohit points to the height and opts against the review. 

Akash Deep to Smith, down leg side, Smith pulls his bat away last minute. Around the wicket goes Akash Deep, Smith picks up a couple after the ball clips off his pads. 

Bumrah induces the edge from Labuschagne, falls just short of Jaiswal at gully. Beats his outside edge with one that straightens after pitching. Beats his outside edge again!

Akash Deep squares up Labuschagne with a back of a length snorter. A touch too straight, clipped through midwicket for three. Four!! Edged and in the gap between the cordon for a boundary. 

Bumrah to Smith, length outside off, left alone. Angles it into the right-hander, thuds his thigh pads. Smith shuffles across again, doesn’t offer a shot to one that is angled into the thigh again. Quick single to short mid off. 

Akash Deep to Smith, beats his drive on the inside edge. Full on the stumps, pushed to midwicket for a quick single. Labuschagne defends one off the inside half to the legside for another single. Three off the over. 

Bumrah to McSweeney, back of a length angled in, thuds into the thigh pad. WICKET!! Another one in the channel, McSweeney edges it to Kohli at second slip. Dream start for India.

Steve Smith in at 4. Drifting down leg, Pant just manages to get a hand after clipping the batter’s pads. 

Four!! Akash Deep induces the edge from McSweeney, finds the gap past gully and runs away to the boundary. Dabs the next one on the offside and sets off for a quick single. Full on offstump, takes the inside edge and runs away to deep fine for a couple. 

WICKET!! Full and in the channel outside off, this time Khawaja nicks it back to the keeper! Big breakthrough for India.

Full on the stumps first up, defended to shot mid on. Close! Labuschagne opts to leave a ball not too far away from off stump. 

Akash Deep continues, beats McSweeney’s outside edge with a outswinging delivery angled in from wide of the crease. Another one full outside off, McSweeney lets it go.

Bumrah from the other end. Short of a length on off to Khawaja, punched through cover for a couple. Angled into the left-hander, beats his inside edge and hits him on the thigh. Full and outside off, left alone. Squares Khawaja up with a length ball, strikes him on the pad but the umpire says no. A touch too high maybe. Beats his outside edge twice in succession to close out the over. 

Four more deliveries to complete the 14th over. Akash Deep to McSweeney, short of a length outside off, left alone. Slightly fuller, but continues to be well wide of off. McSweeney safely negotiates the over.

IND vs AUS, 3rd Test: Australia’s Marsh wants to focus on the present ahead of Gabba Test

As for his own bowling, Marsh replied: “I haven’t had to bowl too much so far, but my body is feeling really good. I had a sore back. But right now, it’s feeling as good as it has ever felt.”

With nearly the entirety of the first day lost to rain, the remaining four days, weather permitting, will see 98 overs bowled. This means the play will start 30 minutes before the scheduled start of play.

The Australian openers, Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney, saw out a little more than 13 overs on the first day. India won the toss and opted to bowl but got little to no assistance from the surface. 

India’s bowlers struggled to get swing as well, which allowed the Aussie pair to shoulder arms at deliveries with relative ease.
