Culinary Celebration
Nagpur: As the city braces for the hustle and bustle of the annual winter session of the Maharashtra legislature commencing December 16, the multi-storey MLA hostel in Civil Lines is abuzz with activity — not just in its chambers but also in its massive canteen. Designed to cater to 288 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and 72 Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs), the canteen is set to deliver a culinary extravaganza.
For most of the year, the canteen remains relatively quiet, but during this week-long session, it transforms into a vibrant hub of gastronomical delight. Tapan Dey, who runs the canteen, shared the elaborate preparations underway. "We have hired over 140 staff, including chefs from Kolkata, Nagpur, and Madhya Pradesh, to ensure a blend of regional and national flavours," he told TOI.
The day at the canteen begins early, with breakfast service starting at 6:30 am. The menu features an array of South Indian staples like idli, wada sambar, dosa, and uttapam, alongside Nagpur's beloved aloo poha with ‘channa rasa.' For those observing fasts, sabudana wada and khichdi are thoughtfully included.
Lunch promises to be a lavish affair, offering an extensive selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Highlights include chicken and mutton biryani, egg curry, and the standout methi lasuni. Dey assures that both variety and authenticity will shine through, reflecting the diverse palettes of Maharashtra's elected representatives.
Dinner, meanwhile, is rooted in tradition. For those craving rustic, home-style food, the canteen will serve Maharashtrian staples such as jhunka bhakar and baingan ka bharta. These simple yet flavourful dishes are expected to be a hit among those seeking comfort food after long hours in the House.
The pièce de résistance is the dessert. Chefs from Kolkata will prepare Khajur Gurer Rasgulla and Masala Gulab Jamun, adding a touch of sweetness to end the day on a high note.
Dey emphasised the focus on hygiene and quality. "Our goal is to offer not just tasty food but also ensure that it meets the highest standards of cleanliness and freshness," he said.
The winter session is not only a time for legislative debates and policymaking, but also a celebration of camaraderie and regional diversity. For the lawmakers and their guests, the MLA hostel canteen becomes a melting pot of flavours, traditions, and culinary excellence — truly embodying the spirit of the session. MSID:: 116315467 413 |
