Energy efficiency plays a pivotal role in the sustainable development of a nation. This dedication to sustainability in India is commemorated as the National Energy Conservation Day, marked annually on December 14. The day reminds us all about the shared responsibility of adopting sustainable energy practices.

Introduced in 1991, the National Energy Conservation Day is championed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power and serves as a reminder of the vital role that energy plays in our day-to-day lives and the urgency to conserve it. It symbolises India's commitment to energy efficiency and conservation.

In simple terms, energy conservation is all about looking for various ways to reduce unnecessary energy usage through the promotion of efficient practices and technologies.

On the National Energy Conservation Day 2024, we take a look at various energy conservation techniques:

1. Purchase product with a 5-star rating

People should always look out for the star labels by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) while purchasing electrical appliances as it is a voluntary method for the manufacturers to indicate an appliance's energy efficiency. The star rating indicates the efficiency of a product and the ones with a 5-star rating are considered of higher efficiency.

In simple terms, the higher the energy efficiency rating of a product, the lower will be its energy consumption. By purchasing 5-star rated products, people can effectively reduce their energy costs.

2. Switch to LED

If you are among those still dependent on CFLs and incandescent bulbs in their homes, you are definitely getting high electricity bills and should look forward to replacing them with LED bulbs.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Coal said that in the financial year 2023-24, initiatives like the replacement of 1.37 lakh conventional lights with LED lights, installation of 2,165 energy-efficient air conditioners, 46,750 super fans as well as deployment of 153 electric vehicles have resulted in remarkable savings.

3. Solar energy

Installation of a full solar power system for your home can prove to be a major gamechanger for substantial investment. If you are looking for more cost-effective ways, you can also consider installing outdoor solar lights as well as solar fans.

4. Reduce wastage of power

Always ensure that you as well as other members of your family turn off electrical appliances whenever they are not in use. This simple habit is one of the most effective methods to lower electricity costs.

5. Regularly servicing

Electrical appliances, not properly maintained, often consume excessive energy. So, always ensure that you regularly get the servicing of your appliances done as it can prolong their lifespan and reduce the consumption of power.
