Downtown Basalt embraced the holiday cheer on Friday with its Merry on Midland block party.
Skiers and snowboarders took to the base of Aspen Mountain on Friday night for the annual Wintersköl rail jam, organized by the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club. Dozens of athletes — most of them young AVSC kids — took turns going through the small rail section and the quarterpipe at the bottom.
No official winners or podium were announced, although athletes were awarded raffle tickets for each standout trick they did, which put them in the running to win prizes.
The rail jam was part of the overall festivities surrounding Wintersköl, the city’s annual “toast to winter” that dates back to 1951. The main day of fun is Saturday, with highlights including: the beer festival (2-6 p.m., Wagner Park); Soupsköl (3-5 p.m., Wagner Park); the bonfire (5-7:30 p.m., Wagner Park); and the torchlight parade and fireworks show (7 p.m. from Aspen Mountain).
