Toyota Urban Cruiser EV Makes Global Debut: Toyota has officially unveiled the Urban Cruiser EV, a fully electric compact SUV developed as a rebadged version of the Suzuki e-Vitara. The model is set to go on sale in European markets by 2025, with plans for an Indian launch likely to follow.

Unique Yet Familiar Design: The Urban Cruiser EV distinguishes itself with design cues inspired by Toyota's current styling trends, including features similar to those on the ninth-generation Camry. Key elements include sleek headlamps with eyebrow-like extensions, a grille-separated bonnet, and a central air vent integrated into the minimalist bumper.

Shared Side Profile: While the front fascia has Toyota-specific styling, the SUV’s side profile retains the design of the Suzuki e-Vitara. It includes squared-off wheel arches, robust side cladding, and consistent window lines. The charging port is positioned identically on the front fender.

Rear Design Comparisons: At the rear, the Urban Cruiser EV echoes the e-Vitara with lightbar-style tail lamps, a roof spoiler, and a chunky bumper. However, Toyota has incorporated unique internal details in the tail lamps to distinguish its model.

Flexible Cabin Features: Inside, the Urban Cruiser EV offers adjustable rear seating with a 40:20:40 split, sliding functionality, and a reclining option. This design improves flexibility for passengers and luggage storage.

Powertrain Options Revealed: Toyota has announced two battery options for the Urban Cruiser EV: a 49kWh unit for entry-level models and a larger 61kWh unit for higher variants. The smaller battery is paired with a 144hp motor driving the front wheels, while the larger battery supports both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations.

AWD and Off-Road Enhancements: All-wheel-drive variants add a second motor to the rear axle, boosting the total output to 184hp and 300Nm of torque. These models include off-road-focused features like hill descent control and Trail Mode, which helps distribute power for better traction on uneven terrain.

Technology and Safety Features: The Urban Cruiser EV boasts advanced technology, including a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims include a JBL sound system, a wireless phone charger, and a single-zone automatic climate control system. Safety features include a 360-degree camera and an advanced driver assistance suite (ADAS) with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a pre-collision system.

Dimensions and Production: The production version of the Urban Cruiser EV has slightly smaller dimensions than its concept version, measuring 4,285mm in length. It is built on a shared platform with the Suzuki e-Vitara and will be manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility in India. Despite the similarities, the Urban Cruiser EV is marginally larger than the Suzuki model, offering a turning radius of 5.2 metres.

Launch Timeline: Toyota plans to showcase the Urban Cruiser EV at the Brussels Motor Show in January 2025. Pricing details for the UK market will be disclosed in the third quarter of 2025, with an Indian market launch expected towards the end of the year.
