A fire at a private hospital in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, claimed seven lives, including that of a three-year-old boy, on Thursday (December 13) night. Patients and staff were trapped as the flames spread, and several feared being caught in a lift.

Fire and Rescue Services promptly began efforts to control the blaze and evacuate those inside. According to officials, approximately 50 ambulances from nearby areas were mobilised to transfer patients to the district government hospital in Dindigul.

Rescue teams successfully evacuated around 30 in-patients, who were immediately admitted to the government facility. However, seven individuals were discovered inside the hospital lift, having suffocated due to the dense smoke.

Preliminary investigations suggest an electrical short circuit was the likely cause of the fire. The blaze spread swiftly, generating thick smoke that complicated evacuation efforts.

Television footage captured scenes of smoke and flames engulfing parts of the building, while fire tenders battled to bring the situation under control. Meanwhile, distressed relatives gathered outside, anxiously awaiting updates on their loved ones as rescue operations continued late into the night.
