Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a Rs 5 crore cash prize for D. Gukesh in recognition of the 18-year-old’s remarkable achievement of becoming the youngest World Chess Champion.
Gukesh became the 18th and the latest World Champion after defeating China’s Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship 2024 in Singapore on Thursday.
Gukesh’s title win came after he trumped reigning champion Ding in the 14th round. The game was set for a draw before reigning champion Ding blundered in the 55th move, effectively gifting the game to his rival.
“To honour the monumental achievement of D Gukesh, the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, I am delighted to announce a cash prize of ₹5 crore!” announced Stalin on X.
“His historic victory has brought immense pride and joy to the nation. May he continue to shine and achieve greater heights in the future,” his post added.
Gukesh is only the second Indian after five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand to claim this title.
Gukesh will walk away with $ 1.3 million (approx Rs 11.03 crore) from the 2.5 million prize purse.
Gukesh qualified for the World Championship after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year.
