Salem: Residents of Koneripatty village have urged the government to construct a high-level bridge over Suvetha River near Thammampatty in Salem district.
Koneripatty is part of the Thammampatty town panchayat and includes Belgium Colony, Bharathipuram, Kondayampalli, and Nagiyampatty, with a population exceeding 5,000 people. Locals say they are forced to wade through the river to get to the other side.
V Ramaraj, a local said, "To reach the opposite bank, we have to walk through the river's path. When the river is dry it is manageable, however, when it is flowing, we must either wade through the river or take a detour of at least 10kms."
Villagers also pointed out that most of the schools and colleges are in Thammampatty, Gangavalli, and Koodamalai, making it difficult for students to reach their educational institutions. "The lack of a high-level bridge forces students to cross the river on foot," said P Kannan of Belgium Colony, adding that the conditions worsen during heavy rains.
The community expressed disappointment that neither the district administration nor the state government has initiated efforts to address the issue and construct a bridge.
Further villagers highlighted that the absence of a ration shop in their area requires them to cross the river to access the one in Thammampatty. "We would appreciate it if the district administration establishes a ration shop in our village," another resident said. Farmers also struggle to transport their produce to nearby towns, often forced to make a lengthy round trip.
Besides the bridge, locals have urged the government to provide them with other essential services like a ration shop, paved roads, and electricity.
