Vadodara: The Kailash Cancer Hospital and Research Center in Goraj in the city, will become the first hospital in the state to offer CAR T-Cell therapy to cancer patients. The hospital started with the inspiration of Anuben Thakkar, and the therapy will be kicked off on her death anniversary on Dec 18.
The hospital is among the most popular cancer treatment hospitals in Gujarat and neighbouring states. The hospital has installed the laboratory for the therapy at a cost of Rs 12 crore. According to a communique by the hospital, the therapy, which costs around Rs 40 lakh at some hospitals in the country, will be available at around half this cost in the hospital.
The therapy involves isolating immune cells called T Cells. These are then prepared to fight cancer by altering the genes inside T Cells to help them attack the cancer. The cells are then reintroduced into the body of the cancer patient. The treatment is believed to be helpful even in cases where other treatments are not working.
