COIMBATORE: A 39-year-old woman and her four-year-old son died on the spot after a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in which they were travelling hit a roadside tree on Pollachi-Palakkad Road near Anaimalai in Coimbatore district on Friday morning.
The deceased were identified as Y Asha, 39, and her son Y Anuppuraj, 4, from Kulathupalayam in Tirupur district. Anaimalai police said Yogarathinam from Kulathupalayam near Anaipudur in Tirupur district was travelling along with his wife Asha, sons Abhineswaran, 11, Anuppuraj, and his daughter Ashwathi, 21, in the MPV. They were heading towards a temple in Thrissur district in Kerala state.
M Vimalraj, 35, from Balaji Nagar in Tirupur, was driving the MPV. When they were travelling on Pollachi-Palakkad Road, the driver Vimalraj lost control of the vehicle, and the vehicle veered off the road into an agricultural field and hit a coconut tree at Govindapuram. The driver and co-passenger side airbags were deployed, and Vimalraj, who was sitting at the wheel, and Yogarathinam, who was sitting in the passenger seat, managed to escape.
Asha and her son Anuppuraj, who were sitting in the second row of the MPV, sustained severe head injuries in the impact and died on the spot. Abhineshwaran and his elder sister Ashwathi sustained minor injuries. The locals rushed to the spot and sent the injured people to the Pollachi govt hospital for treatment.
Anaimalai police also reached the spot and sent the two dead bodies to the Pollachi govt hospital for postmortem. Further investigation is on.
