JAMMU: A day after two cattle smugglers died near a check post in J&K’s Samba district, fueling speculation on social media about their death in an encounter, police on Thursday trashed the viral reports, explaining that the duo died in a road accident.
"No firing incident took place. In fact, the cattle smugglers’ speeding vehicle broke through a police barrier in Nud and hit a policeman, leaving him seriously injured. As they tried to flee, the driver lost control, plunging the vehicle into a deep ditch a few metres away,” a police spokesperson said.
One of the two animals in the vehicle was killed in the accident, police said.
