Guwahati: An internationally acclaimed inorganic chemist, distinguished academician and former vice-chancellor of Tezpur University, Prof Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri, passed away in Guwahati on Friday.
Prof Chaudhuri had an illustrious career as an outstanding achiever in the field of research and academics as well as a dynamic academic administrator.
The prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardee had served as education adviser to Assam govt and as dean, research and development at IIT Guwahati. He was also the head of department of chemistry at IIT-Guwahati and in North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong.
Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in is condolence statement stated, "I am deeply saddened to know the sudden death of Prof. Mihir Kanti Choudhury. As an academic he was par excellence and contributed immensely to the growth of higher education in Assam. He was also a good human being and apart from taking crucial role in stimulating intellectually imbued minds of the state, he helped his students to become virtuous human beings. His untimely departure is a great loss to the state and country."
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma offering condolences wrote on X, "Anguished by the passing away of Dr. Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri, internationally renowned inorganic chemist, former advisor to the Education Dept & former VC of Tezpur University. Dr. Chaudhuri's remarkable contributions to chemical sciences earned him the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1989. His contribution to Assam's higher education sector will always be cherished. I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time."
Tezpur University (TU) organized a solemn condolence meeting to pay tribute to the late Prof Chaudhuri.
"Tezpur University was his family, and he played a pivotal role in shaping the university into a renowned institution of learning. His passion for research, his commitment to academic excellence, and his dedication to mentoring young minds have inspired generations of students and researchers", Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, VC of TU, said while paying tribute to the departed soul. The condolence meeting was attended by faculty members, staff and students of the university.
