Jamshedpur: Autorickshaw drivers in Jamshedpur will now have to wear uniform and carry identity cards while they are out on the streets with their vehicles.
East Singhbhum DC Ananya Mittal has asked traffic police and transport department officials to conduct random inspections to make the auto drivers comply with the Motor Vehicle (MV) Act rules. Mittal has also asked officials to check the permit of autorickshaws and driving license of the drivers. Directions have also been given to prevent the under-age drivers.
"The auto drivers will have to pick commuters from the dedicated stands in the city. Deviation from the norms would attract penal action. Impose fine on the errant auto drivers and discipline them," Mittal told officials at a meeting on Thursday. The DC issued directions to officials in the wake of the reports of the auto drivers driving vehicles in violation of the road safety norms and the MV Act rules at several places in the town.
Besides that, the DC has asked officials to take strict action against the autorickshaws and other vehicles found parked along roads or in no parking zones.
Jamshedpur Autorickshaw Union member, Ajay Mahato, said: "The inspection will help in identifying auto owners who have the permission to operate the vehicle in the adjoining towns outside the territory of Jamshedpur but are running the autos in the city." Over 12,000 autos operate in the Steel City and a large chunk of the autos run on the streets linking the industrial town to the adjoining towns of Mango, Adityapur and Jugsalai.
