Washim: A 27-year-old woman herding sheep with her family delivered a baby in an agricultural field last week in Karanja tehsil. The swift response of social worker Ajay Dhoke and nurse Sharda ensured the mother and newborn were safe after the delivery in challenging circumstances.
The incident took place about 5km away from Injori village in Karanja tehsil on December 6. Sindhu Koradkar, a shepherd, began experiencing labour pains around 5pm while in the field. Her husband, unfamiliar with the area and unsure of what to do, was desperate for help.
"I had no idea how to manage the situation. The village was far, and there were no immediate resources," said Sindhu's husband. A passer-by suggested he call local social worker Ajay Dhoke, who responded immediately.
Dhoke quickly reached the village health centre and informed nurse Sharda. Without delay, Sharda grabbed medical supplies and accompanied Dhoke on his motorcycle to the field. Due to the lack of a road, they had to leave the motorcycle about 2,000 feet from the spot and walk the remaining distance.
"When we reached, the woman had already delivered the baby. We immediately started providing basic care," said Sharda. The nurse cut the umbilical cord, wrapped the newborn to protect it from exposure, and stabilized the mother as much as possible.
However, the mother's condition was critical, and immediate hospitalization was essential. Dhoke called the 102 helpline, but the ambulance could not reach the field, so a bullock cart was arranged to transport the unconscious mother to the ambulance.
The mother and baby were transferred to Karanja Rural Hospital, where Dr Sheikh Mustaqeem and his team provided further treatment. Both Sindhu and her newborn daughter are now healthy and recovering. The doctors confirmed that the timely intervention was crucial in saving their lives.
The efforts of social worker Ajay Dhoke and nurse Sharda were widely praised. AYUSH minister Prataprao Jadhav also recognized their effort and honoured them for their dedication. "This incident highlights how quick decisions and teamwork can save lives, even in the most challenging circumstances," said Jadhav.
