Lucknow: Lucknow Police's commitment towards enhancing law and order received a boost under ‘Operation Conviction 2024', resulting in the conviction of 329 criminals in 256 serious criminal cases to date.
DCP, central zone, Raveena Tyagi, said that the operation, which started on the directions of the DGP and CP Lucknow on Jan 1, reflected the police department's relentless efforts and coordination with the prosecution.
Tyagi said that under ‘Operation Conviction 2024,' the Lucknow Police and prosecution team worked tirelessly to secure convictions in various grave cases, including murder, rape, dowry death, and violations under the Gangster Act. "The operation's success led to life sentences and long-term imprisonment for those found guilty, including 59 criminals who received life sentences and 44 others sentenced to over 10 years in prison," she said.
She added that the crackdown also highlighted the police's special focus on crimes against women and children, with a significant portion of the cases—113 out of 256 (approximately 45%)—related to crimes against women. These included sexual offenses, dowry death, and crimes under the POCSO Act, contributing to increased security for women and children in the region.
Tyagi further said that the operation's success in handling 61 rape cases and 85 cases under the POCSO Act further emphasised the commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society. As a result, the conviction rate for crimes against women and children increased, establishing a sense of safety and trust in the community.
"The seriousness of the efforts is evident in the statistics, with a total of 256 cases resulting in 329 convictions. Of these, 94 cases were from the Western Zone, 40 from the Eastern Zone, 25 from the Central Zone, 47 from the Northern Zone, and 50 from the Southern Zone," the DCP said.
