Gukesh wins World Chess Championship 2024, becomes youngest player in the world to do so
Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh has created history by performing brilliantly in the Chess World Chess Championship 2024. Gukesh won the World Championship title by defeating defending champion Ding Liren 1-0 in the 14th game. With this, this 18-year-old Indian player became the youngest world champion.
The game started with 6.5 points. The final match also seemed to be heading towards a draw when a mistake by Liren proved costly for him and gave Gukesh the victory. After 12 years, an Indian has succeeded in winning this title.
Before Gukesh, this title was won by Vishwanathan Anand in 2012 while playing for India. This year has been memorable for Gukesh. He won gold in the Candidates Tournament and the Chess Olympiad in 2024.
Impressive achievements in young career
Gukesh became India’s youngest grandmaster at the age of 12 years, seven months, 17 days and missed the tag of the world’s youngest grandmaster by only 17 days. He overtook five-time world champion Vishwanathan Anand last year to enter the country’s top-ranked player for the first time in 36 years. Now he has added another achievement to that impressive list.
With the win of the Candidates Chess Tournament, Gukesh became the youngest challenger for the world title, breaking the record set by the great Garry Kasparov 40 years ago. Former Russian great Kasparov was 22 when he qualified to clash with compatriot Anatoly Karpov in 1984.
