Oil held an advance as the US indicated that a softer market may allow for further sanctions on Russia’s energy sector.
West Texas Intermediate traded above $70 a barrel, after rising 2.5% on Wednesday, while Brent closed near $73. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that relatively low prices might allow further action against Russia’s ability to raise war revenue from its energy sector. The Biden administration is weighing new, harsher sanctions, according to people familiar with the matter.
Asian stocks rose Thursday after US equities snapped a two-day slide on benign inflation data that supported expectations of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut this month.
Australian and Japanese equities climbed while Hong Kong futures were steady. The S&P 500 rose 0.8% and the Nasdaq 100 advanced 1.9% to a new high Wednesday, with the strong showing for tech pushing Amazon.com Inc and Meta Platforms Inc. to fresh records. Broadcom Inc. rose 6.6% following a report that the chipmaker was working on an AI deal with Apple Inc.
Its been nearly a week since the Nifty is stuck in this 300-point range between its 50 and 100-Day Moving Average. It does not come as a surprise either, as barring that 50 basis points CRR cut on Friday, most of the commentary from the Reserve Bank of India erred on the side of caution. Therefore, Thursday’s CPI inflation print becomes crucial for the markets to react to.
