Noida: As temperatures have dipped in the city, Noida Authority has set up seven night shelters at various locations, including those at Noida Stadium in Sector 21 A, and at the Barat Ghar in Sector 135.
These shelters, also known as rain baseras, can accommodate approximately 400 people across Noida, and offer facilities like sanitisers, drinking water, mattresses, and blankets.
At Noida Stadium in Sector 21-A, the largest shelter in the city, 150 people can be accommodated. On Thursday morning, however, it remained unoccupied. An official said people may start coming in towards the evening. "The shelter became operational from today. People will get to know about it soon and we hope they will come to the shelter in the evening," he said.
Other shelters are in Sector 135, Mamura, Kondli, Sector 62, Barolla, and Sorkha.
Noida Authority CEO, Lokesh M, said that he directed the officials to ensure that all essential facilities are provided at these shelters. "Designated officials have been deployed at each shelter to facilitate smooth operations," he said.
Greater Noida Authority, too, recently set up six similar shelters – at Pari Chowk, Delta 2, Habibpur, Yaqubpur, Sector P-3 and near GIMS. These shelters offer the same basic necessities as those in Noida.
Harinder Bhati, a member of Active Citizens' team, said that his team members regularly visit the shelter homes to ensure a smooth functioning there.
Sonu Kumar, a labourer staying at the Delta 2 shelter for a week, said, "We are getting all basic facilities here. It is a good initiative by the Authority."
On Thursday, Noida recorded a minimum temperature of 9 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 23 degrees Celsius. According to the weather department, Delhi-NCR is likely to experience a cold wave from Thursday to Sunday.
