Shrivalli Bhamidipaty sails into second round of ITF women’s tennis tournament
Shrivalli Bhamidipaty raced past Ekaterina Reyngold 6-4, 6-1 to set up a second round clash against Punnin Kovapitukted of Thailand in the $25,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the District Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Akanksha Nitture, Humera Baharmus and Laalitya were the other Indian players progressing into the second round on this day, and they all beat Indian opponents.
Ekaterina Kazionova saved three match points in the second set tie break to beat Zuzanna Pawlikowska of Poland 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-1. Zuzanna struggled with her serve and landed 17 double faults in the match.

Inter-Ministry Championship: Gogoi, Yadav register wins
Anshuman Gogoi and Shubham Yadav won their singles and doubles matches to help Ministry of Communication to a 3-1 victory over Delhi Audit in the final of the Inter-Ministry badminton championship at the AIIMS Gymkhana.
In the women’s final, Namita Pathania won her singles match and partnered Swati Sharma to win the doubles as well, in taking Delhi Audit to a 2-0 victory over Ministry of Communication.

National Juniors: Haryana wins both team championship titles on offer
Local favourite Pratik Maharana defied a sore back to script a new meet record while securing the under-18 men’s gold medal on the concluding day of the National Junior Athletics Championships at the Kalinga Stadium on Wednesday.
Running in good rhythm, Maharana held on to his lead confidently as he lowered his personal best from 21.41, clocked at the South Asian junior meet in Chennai in September, to 21.28 to record an impressive victory.
“I did light training to balance my rehab and preparation for this competition. I was aiming for the national record (21.08), but had to settle for the meet record,” said 17-year-old Maharana, training at Rourkela.
Sumit Rathee (8:45.75) smashed the meet record in under-20 men’s 3000m steeplechase, winning by a margin of more than 11 seconds while leading a pack of four runners.
National record holder Deepika (52.45m) rewrote the meet record with her second throw as she claimed the under-20 women’s javelin title.
Sakshi Chavan, who took the under-20 100m gold, switched to under-18 200m to pick up her second gold with a meet record (24.14).
Homeboy Dondapati Mrutyam Jayaram, who added the under-20 200m crown to his 100m title, and Prachi Devkar, making her National debut in 3000m steeplechase after winning the 5000m yellow metal, also snatched their second gold medals.
Haryana took the team championships in both men and women.

Manyavar wins teams’ title in Ashok Ruia Memorial Winter National Bridge Championship
Manyavar clinched the team’s title while Bindiya Kohli and TV Ramani won the mixed pairs’ competition in the Ashok Ruia Memorial Winter National Bridge Championship on Wednesday.
Manyavar, which was leading after four rounds in the teams’ event on Tuesday, won the remaining three rounds on Wednesday to record a compelling win.
The team, which was seeded 13th, consisted of Anil Padhye, Anand Samant, Sundaram Sridhar, Jitu Solani and Rajesh Dalal.
They scored a total of 105.93 points to seal the win and also booked a berth in the semifinals of the Indian team’s selection trials for the World Championship.
The Hemant Jalan team, which was placed seventh, finished second as it defeated the second-placed Dhamapur Sugar Mills unit and the third-placed Shree Cements team by just 0.8 points.
Dhampur Sugar Mills finished third, while Team Aristos finished fourth and Aquarius came fifth.
Meanwhile, in the mixed pairs competition, Bindiya and Ramani won by a big margin of 23 points over the second-placed pair of Aditi Zaveri and Vishwajit Poddar.
