A Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is a ten-digit alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department of India, linking an individual’s financial transactions with the tax department. It is essential for tax filings, income tax returns, TDS/TCS credits, and other specified transactions.
To apply for a PAN card, one can visit online portals like Protean (NSDL eGov), UTITSL, or the Income Tax E-filing Portal.
How to apply for online PAN card: Step-by-step guide
1. Portal selection: An applicant can opt for these channels for submission of their application:
Protean (NSDL eGov): https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/index.html
UTITSL: https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN/
Income-tax E-filing Portal (Instant E-PAN): https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
2. Application form submission: Post-portal selection, the applicants have to fill an online application form with contact information and details.
3. Submit required documents: As per the applicant's status (Individual, HUF, etc), supporting documents have to be sent by post or courier to the respective authorities (Protean/UTITSL). For certain applications, an Aadhaar-based OTP can be used for e-verification.
4. Make payment: The application fee is ₹91 (excluding GST) for Indian communication addresses and ₹862 (excluding GST) for foreign addresses. Payments are accepted through credit/debit cards, demand drafts, and net banking.
5. Documents for verification: Along with the form, applicants must provide proof of identity, proof of address, and a recent photograph. For applications made on or after November 1, 2009, individuals and HUFs choosing an office address must submit both office and residential address proofs.

For Aadhaar-linked individuals, an Instant E-PAN service is available. This service is paperless, free of charge, and issues a valid e-PAN, accessible through the Income-tax E-filing Portal. This option requires the applicant to have a registered mobile number with Aadhaar.
