Cuttack: Barabati-Cuttack MLA Sofia Firdous has urged the state govt to propose the establishment of an international aviation hub at Charbatia here.
The proposal comes in the wake of Centre's plans to develop international aviation hubs across the country, with Navi Mumbai in western India and Bengaluru in south India already identified as sites.
"The proposal was sent to chief minister Mohan Majhi on Tuesday for sending to the central govt," said Firdous.
Highlighting the strategic importance of eastern India, Firdous said, "The region is yet to find a suitable location for such a project. Charbatia in Cuttack is an ideal site for an international aviation hub. The area has 260 acres of govt land available, and with additional land acquisition, Charbatia can be developed into a world-class hub," she said.
Firdous emphasised that the proposed hub would significantly enhance air connectivity in the region, linking Bhubaneswar, industrial hubs like Angul, Keonjhar and Paradip, and fostering economic growth. "Odisha has immense potential to become a key player in the aviation sector. State govt must seize the opportunity and present a proposal to the central govt for the establishment of an international aviation hub at Charbatia," she added.
Charbatia, currently home to an airstrip managed by Indian Air Force, is strategically located with proximity to key industrial and commercial zones. Developing it into an aviation hub could also boost tourism and trade in the state, sources said.
