Gandhinagar: The Sardar Patel Ring Road is set for a Rs 2,100 crore revamp, which will see it turn into a junction-free six-lane thoroughfare. The project, approved by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, will address traffic congestion, pave the way for further development in the area and facilitate inter-and intra-state transport.
A meeting convened on Dec 5 under the chief minister's chairmanship deliberated on upgrading the existing stretch from four lanes to six with a presentation of the detailed development project report. At the meeting, also attended by senior govt officials, the chief minister sanctioned Rs 2,100 crore for provisional expenditure for SP Road's enhancement and six-laning. The presentation included current traffic statistics, projections for future traffic growth and justification for capacity enhancement. The proposal outlined expanding the main carriageway to six lanes and the service road to three or four lanes, incorporating sustainable measures for a green highway.
Following a comprehensive assessment of the project's DPR, the chief minister endorsed enhancing the road's capacity. Considering the estimated project outlay of approximately Rs 2,100 crore, it was decided to prepare tenders based on the hybrid annuity model (HAM) after analysing the existing EPC, HAM and BOT models. This strategy aims to complete the project within the designated timeframe, officials said.
The capacity enhancement and junction-free development of the Sardar Patel Ring Road by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) is expected to enhance traffic management and substantially reduce congestion. The concurrent development of this ring road will expedite growth in the city's peri-urban areas while facilitating seamless interstate and intrastate transport by linking crucial national and state highways.
