Sundar branch canal breaks in Jind
JIND: In an incident this morning, the Sundar Branch Canal broke in Nandgarh village in the Julana area of Jind district, flooding hundreds of acres of agricultural land. The breach, which occurred around 6 am, caused extensive crop damage, submerging vast stretches of farmland. Farmers expressed frustration and distress over the delayed response from authorities.
The canal breach reportedly caused a 20-foot-long erosion along the embankment, rapidly inundating the surrounding fields. The flooded areas included significant portions of wheat crops, with damage currently being assessed.
In addition to the destruction of crops, floodwaters also began approaching the village. Villagers fear the situation could worsen if timely preventive measures are not taken, especially as there is concern about similar incidents occurring in the future.
As a precaution, a private school near the village was closed for the day, with all classes canceled and children sent home early.
Farmers criticised the lack of immediate action from the local administration. Despite informing the authorities about the breach, no visible action was taken for several hours. They are demanding urgent intervention to prevent further flooding and mitigate losses.
"We have lost everything in a matter of hours. The water spread quickly, and it's almost impossible to save our crops now. We informed the authorities as soon as the breach happened, but no one has come to help us yet. We are facing a massive loss and are desperate for assistance," said Narender Singh, a local farmer.
The breach has also caused anxiety among residents, with many fearing their homes could be affected. Some villagers have evacuated their homes as a precaution, but the lack of administrative support has left them uncertain about the next steps.
Julana SDM stated that the losses are being assessed and action will be taken accordingly. "The situation is now under control, and the water has been diverted into other canals. Necessary steps are being taken to normalize the situation," he added.
