2024 was a year to remember on Instagram, as Indian creators and trends made waves globally. At the Meta Festival in Mumbai, Instagram’s Year-in-Review revealed how the platform became a creative powerhouse, connecting India to the world in exciting ways.

India Goes Global (And the World Went Desi!)

Indian artists took centre stage with international collaborations that fans couldn’t get enough of. Diljit Dosanjh teamed up with Saweetie for Khutti, King dropped a remix of Maan Meri Jaan with Nick Jonas, and Harsh Likhari joined Connor Price for Customs.

Meanwhile, desi vibes went global! The Asoka makeup trend went viral in countries like Indonesia and Slovakia, while Japanese creators lip-synced to Bollywood dialogues from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Even international influencers like Drew Hicks and Agu Stanley embraced Indian languages in their content.

Regional Music Ruled the Reels

India’s music scene was on fire this year, and Instagram reels were proof. From Haryanvi banger Jale 2 with 9.7 million reels to Tamil hit Aasa Kooda racking up 1.8 million, regional tracks drove creativity across the country. Even Bollywood tunes like Tauba Tauba and indie tracks like Nadaaniyan became reel favourites.

Nostalgia Meets New Blockbusters

Entertainment trends balanced nostalgia and fresh stories. The re-release of iconic films like Rockstar and Laila Majnu sparked nostalgia, while the 30th anniversary of FRIENDS and Hera Pheri memes kept fans engaged. On the other hand, new releases like Mirzapur Season 3, Panchayat, and Laapataa Ladies captured hearts, with the latter even making an Oscar bid.

Sports and Rising Stars Took Over

It was another big year for sports! The Indian cricket team’s T20 World Cup win, Neeraj Chopra’s legendary throws, and RCB’s victory at the first Women’s Premier League gave fans plenty to cheer for.

Beyond sports, trailblazers like rapper Hanumankind, comedian Nancy Tyagi, Dolly Chai Wala, and the Vada Pao Girl became Instagram sensations, shaping cultural conversations.

A Year to Remember

From music to memes, sports to stories, Instagram’s 2024 trends reflect a year where Indian creativity resonated globally, and global culture embraced all things desi.
