Coimbatore: An expert team from IIT-Madras inspected Sengulam lake in the city on Monday, to examine the water seepage issue in the waterbody. Houses in the vicinity of the lake are prone to inundation during heavy rains.
Sengulam lake which has a capacity of 3.18 million cubic feet (mcft), is located in Kulathupalayam, a suburban area of Coimbatore. Wards 87 and 88 are inundated due to surplus water in the lake during rain. Besides, water seepage from the ground happens often even when there is no rain.
Babu P, councillor, ward 87 said, "Houses keep flooding whenever it rains, affecting about 200 families in the vicinity. While the establishment of a drainage facility has controlled flooding, there is no permanent solution yet." He added that since the tank is filled with clay soil, arresting the water seepage is not possible. He, however, welcomed the corporation's move to seek expert opinion to solve the issue.
Meanwhile, a corporation official said the expert team will soon file a report based on their observation and later provide suggestions to address the issue.
Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran accompanied the team during the inspection.
