Google Maps Platform, On Monday (December 9), announced that developers will now have free access to its products, including Maps, Routes, Places, and Environment APIs and SDKs.

This move is particularly helpful for Indian developers to build more, who will have access to $6,800 (over 5.7 lakh) worth of free monthly usage of these products.

This replaces the current fixed $200 monthly credit and includes access to APIs such as Maps, Routes, Places, and Environment.

Developers will only incur costs if they exceed the free usage limits. Popular products like the Maps Embed API and Maps SDK will continue to be free without restrictions.

Tools like Address Descriptors, developed specifically for India, present addresses in familiar local formats, while the Air Quality API delivers reliable data on air quality.

To make the tools more attainable for all developers, the platform also recently introduced an India-specific pricing plan with up to 70% lower rates and up to 90% off for some APIs. This change itself has seen the costs incurred by bigger developers decrease by more than 50%, and even more for smaller developers.

Kunal Gupta, SVP, Technology at Magicpic, said, "Google Maps Platform's ONDC pricing programme is a game-changer! It allows us to scale Magicpic and help even more shoppers discover amazing local deals. With Google Maps Platform, we're able to provide our users with a seamless and accurate location-based experience to discover nearby retailers, get directions, and unlock incredible savings! It's clear that Google is invested in empowering Indian businesses like ours to succeed."

The Google Maps Platform has been an especially important tool for Indian developers, allowing them to use it to create innovative apps for nearly a decade. The coverage for the platform in India stretches across seven million kilometers of roads, 300 million buildings, and 35 million businesses and places.

These changes have helped Indian developers create and experiment with more powerful and immersive solutions.
