Aizawl: Following a viral CCTV footage showing a violent assault, Aizawl Police have apprehended C Lalnunfela, aged 22, at approximately 1:00 am on Monday. The footage showed him attacking a young woman, reportedly his girlfriend, leading to significant public outcry.
The accused, who resides in Chanmari West, Aizawl, faces charges under Section 74 of the BNS Act, 2023, at Kulikawn Police station in Aizawl's southern outskirts. The offence carries a prison term ranging from one to five years. After the police initiated suo moto proceedings, Lalnunfela appeared before the court on Tuesday, where a local judge ordered his transfer to Central Jail, Aizawl under judicial custody.
The surveillance footage captured the incident on an empty street, showing Lalnunfela physically attacking the woman until she fell to the ground. A scooter visible in the footage indicated they had travelled there together.
The authorities have not disclosed the victim's identity. According to sources, before turning off his mobile phone and becoming temporarily untraceable, Lalnunfela permitted the woman to briefly contact her family to confirm her wellbeing.
The incident has generated significant anger across social media platforms, with the public calling for immediate legal action.
The Mizoram State Commission For Women has also initiated proceedings on Monday, registering MSCW Case No. 80/2024 (suo moto) and directing the state police to investigate the matter.
