UDAIPUR: Three members of a family died from food poisoning after drinking tea containing pesticide in Banswara district, police said Monday.
According to Ramswaroop Meena, SHO of Ambapura police station, the incident occurred in Nalda village under Ambapura police station on Sunday when a family member mistakenly added pesticide to the tea, thinking it was tea leaves.
Dariya mistakenly added pesticide used for termites and weeds instead of tea leaves to the milk and boiled it. She then served the tea to family members. Six people, including a neighbour, drank the tea. Dariya herself also drank it.
Half an hour after consuming the poisonous tea, Dariya (53), Shambhu (37), Lalu (70), Chanda (28), Akshay (10), and neighbour Manish (35) began feeling unwell and started vomiting.
Neighbours took them to the district hospital in Banswara by ambulance, where doctors declared Dariya dead. The remaining five were immediately referred to the district hospital in Udaipur. While being transported from Banswara to Udaipur by ambulance, Chanda passed away near Salumbar. On Monday, Akshay died during treatment at the district hospital in Udaipur. Shambhu, Lalu, and Manish are still receiving treatment at Udaipur's district hospital.
The deceassed included Dariya, her daughter-in-law Chanda, and Chanda's 14-year-old son Akshay.
On Sunday, all members of Lalu's family were supposed to attend a wedding ceremony in a nearby village. They were all ready for the event when Dariya made the tea in the afternoon. A packet containing the pesticide was in the kitchen, which Dariya mistook for tea leaves and added to the milk, police said.
