Bhubaneswar: Hundreds of school and college teachers staged a protest here on Tuesday demanding grants for eligible institutes, seniority for contract teachers over non-tenure teachers, removal of disparity in grade pay, increase in retirement age to 62 years, implementation of the old pension scheme and filling up of vacant teaching posts.
School and mass education minister Nityananda Gond said, "These are long standing demands of teachers and the govt is examining them."
"It is very unfortunate that a teacher and educational worker who works for 25 to 30 years is deprived of govt grants and tries to live life without a pension from the next day of retirement," said Ranjan Kumar Das, convener, Odisha School College Teacher and Employees' Coordination Committee.
Teachers demanded the govt should immediately provide grants to eligible schools and colleges and provide pensions to in-service teachers and teaching staff as per directions of the Orissa high court. "Deemed schools and colleges have not received grants for 25 years, which need to be released immediately," Das said.
Teachers demanded the withdrawal of the new pension scheme and implementation of the old scheme. "After the central govt cancelled the old pension system in force since 2005 and implemented the new pension rules, teachers and teaching staff were particularly affected. After retirement, one has to lead a very miserable life. Even though the govt is giving salaries and other allowances to the old and new grant-aided schools and colleges, recruitment cannot be done for vacant posts as they have not been converted into govt institutes. These institutes have closed down due to a shortage of teachers. Govt must give priority to the education system," Sukant Kumar Behera, president of the committee, said.
