The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday, December 10, predicted heavy rains in several areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka over the next few days.
In its daily bulletin, the weather department noted the low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean with the associated cyclonic circulation extending up to middle tropospheric levels.
Over the next 24 hours, it is expected to move west-northwestwards and become more marked. "It is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards thereafter and reach over the southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri-Lanka–Tamil Nadu coasts around December 11," it added.
Rainfall
Heavy downpour is expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during December 10-13, while very heavy rainfall is likely on December 11 and 12.
Further, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema regions are expected to witness heavy rains at isolated places during December 11-13. Heavy rains are possible over Kerala and Mahe between December 12-14.
Besides these, heavy rains are also possible over south interior Karnataka on December 12 and 13.
Cold Wave
The IMD says northwest, central and east India regions are expected to witness a gradual fall in minimum temperatures by 2-4 degrees Celsius during the next three days, while there will be no significant change thereafter.
The cold wave conditions are likely to prevail over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and west Uttar Pradesh on December 10 and 11; Uttarakhand on December 10; east Rajasthan during December 10-13; Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra and Kutch on December 10 and 11; Punjab and Haryana from December 10-12; west Rajasthan during December 10-13; and west Madhya Pradesh between December 11 and 13.
Dense fog conditions will remain during late night and early morning hours in isolated regions of Punjab and Haryana on December 10, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar and Jharkhand till December 11; east Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till December 12; and Himachal Pradesh and west Uttar Pradesh during December 10-12.
Meanwhile, residents in the national capital woke up to a sunny morning on Tuesday, while the overall air quality index (AQI) remained in the 'poor' category at 229.
The city's temperature is expected to be around 17.6 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 9.05 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 22.23 degrees Celsius.
